2 Restaurants Worth a Visit to Madison + a Vlog

Happy Wednesday, friends! I’m FINALLY here with my final video on my weekend trip to Madison, WI last December. If you missed it, my mom and I went to visit a relative who lives there and we decided to go in December so that we could see the State Christmas Tree, which we used to visit when I was younger. We had so much fun that we definitely want to go back to see more of what Madison has to offer and visit the city when it’s really at its peak: spring and summer. (We’ve been there during warmer months before, but it’s been awhile.)

Today I have two restaurants that you should totally go to Madison for, if all the cool stuff about the city doesn’t excite you. And I have a vlog from our trip. So, without further ado, here are the two restaurants.

IKE’S PIZZA ON STATE STREET

Macaroni and cheese pizza, need I say more? This restaurant is close to the capitol, right on State Street, so if you time it right you can grab lunch after you tour. I would anticipate the restaurant gets busy over typical lunch times, though. I mean, it was busy when we went and I think we were there after the typical lunch rush. You can buy pizza by the slice and one slice is definitely filling! My mom and I actually picked up two slices. One was a really tasty slice with mozzarella, spinach, and tomatoes. I think it was called the Venetian, or something like that. It was what was recommended when I asked if they had a tomato basil. We also had to try the Mac and Cheese pizza, which was SO much better than we anticipated! We cut each slice in half to make a whole for ourselves and it was definitely plenty of food! If pizza isn’t your thing, but you want to check out this cute joint (seriously, such a fun place to go to AND while we were there we got to listen to a random group of carolers sing) there’s also a salad bar.

HA LONG BAY

I heard this was voted one of the best restaurants in Madison, if not the best. As a bonus: it’s not located in the downtown area so it gets you out into a different part of Madison. (Also, there’s a chocolate shop nearby that apparently has the best chocolate. We didn’t stop. I have no explanation. Actually, I do. We passed it and didn’t go back later. I felt like maybe no explanation was better than that one. 😂) We ordered a bunch of appetizers (my favorites were the dumplings; get them for the dipping sauce alone! For our entrees we got the Pad Thai and the Vietnamese Rice Vermicelli Salad with Grilled Chicken. I think their Pad Thai is well-known, but my fave was definitely the salad. Be sure you pour the sauce over it, because it really brings everything together!

THE OLD FASHIONED

We got there before the usual dinner rush starts to try and get a table, but the wait was STILL too long and we ended up leaving, but I wanted to throw it in here anyway so that you can for me! (Just kidding, I definitely plan to check this place out and see if it’s as awesome as I think it will be in a future trip.) This restaurant serves Wisconsin faves. And it’s called Old Fashioned. How perfect is that?!? I was definitely planning to get an old fashioned at Old Fashioned and it would have been amazing. I think they have a fish fry on Friday nights. I’m usually not one for fish, but I do enjoy a good Friday night fish fry in Wisconsin with an old fashioned on the side. Also, it’s right across the street from the capitol and the capitol building at night is 😍.

Aaaaand… last, but definitely not least, here’s the vlog from our trip!

Have you been to Madison? What are your favorite restaurants? Where do I need to go?

It sounds like you had an enjoyable visit to Madison, WI. I always love visiting new places in December because you get to see the beautiful seasonal decorations. The state Christmas tree looked beautiful in your video. I’m sure it was wonderful to see in person.

NOM. I want it all. I think my husband got into the Old Fashioned when he went on a beer trip with some guys. I’m trying to convince my husband that on our St. Louis trip this summer we should come back through Wisconsin and hit up Madison.

Gah. I want to make that Pad Thai my screen saver! I’ve never even been close to Wisconsin, but now I want to know what a Wisconsin fish fry is all about.

Loved the vlog, too. Glad to have found you through that Peaceful Posse!

  • Met this handsome fella today. His name is Chauncey. When he blooms he’ll smell like eau de rotting meat and will make everyone swoon. 😍🥴😷 (If you live in the Twin Cities and visit him on Tuesday you might be able to see/smell him in all his glory.)
  • “Spread love wherever you go.” [Mother Theresa]
  • Whether you had a case of the Mondays or you had a great Monday, a photo of a cute dog is always in order.

PS - There’s a new post on the blog featuring this guy and a few other cute dogs. 🐶
  • If you’re looking for me, I am probably buried in the snow someplace, waiting for mail that never gets delivered and wondering if the only greenery I’ll ever see again are the plants that fill my room. What colors do you see when you look outside?
  • Just booked tickets to head back to a city that captured my heart last year. And I’ll be there a little longer this time! Tell me your NYC faves! What should I do? Where should I eat? Where should I get coffee? And any tips for being social while at @vox_con? I can be an awkward one sometimes. 😂
  • Happy #nationalloveyourpetday to my sweet little sidekick. She was a little bewildered by all the snow we got today, but by the end of the day she was frolicking through it. I so appreciate this little girl and all the joy, laughter, and comfort she brings. Tell me about your pet.
  • Let’s see if I can make it through this without crying. If you’ve been following my Stories, you’ll know that I left town on Wednesday. I mentioned that this isn’t a fun trip, but I followed that up with images of cute dogs and a gorgeous view of Lake Michigan. What I didn’t show was a day spent at the hospital as I visit people I love dearly, one of whom is in ICU and may not get better. This would actually be a great segue into “Instagram is curated,” but not today.

Yesterday was a hard day. It was filled with this view, that brought some peace. It was filled with cute dogs, who brought some comfort. It was also filled with a lot of anxiety and tension and sadness. We ended the day in a group and our conversation was filled with tears as we talked about what’s happening right now and how we feel.

And then the tears turned to laughter as we reminisced about the past and talked about dogs.

It brought to mind that quote by the wise Albus Dumbledore: “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” The day I left, a friend and I were chatting and he said, “Your heart must be aching.” And it is. I wouldn’t necessarily describe anything I’ve felt as happiness, but yesterday I was reminded (because I’ve always known this, sometimes it’s just harder to remember) that the heartache and sadness can coexist with easier moments, too.

I can enjoy this view and accept the peace that it brings as I wonder what the outcome of this will be. I can feel the heaviness that I might not see this person again and accept the comfort that these dogs bring me. I can band together with people that I love to live through a rough day, but also enjoy the good moments that we share in the midst of it.

Laughter can accompany tears.

And when I live through days like today, I wonder if it’s exactly what we need in order to get through them.
  • Happy birthday, Valentino! You have the ability to make me roll my eyes, then melt my heart, all within a matter of seconds. You’re such a delight of a Canine Nephew and the best reason for celebration on Valentine’s Day. 😘
