Sometimes there is nothing better than sitting down with a huge bowl of popcorn and a puppy staring at you with big puppy eyes begging for some as you as you watch a movie. When I don’t know what to watch, I always reach for one of the following.
UNDERCOVER BLUES
This follows Jeff and Jane Blue, who are on their maternity leave from the CIA or the FBI and living it up in New Orleans, where their biggest concern is a mugger named Muerte, who’s intent on taking down Jeff after a failed mugging attempt, until they’re offered a generous bonus to go after their former nemesis Novacek, who just so happens to be operating in New Orleans.
Some people might be rolling their eyes at this being on my favorite movies list, but those people just haven’t watched it enough to see how wonderful it is. This has held the #1 spot on my favorites list since I was seven. It’s hilarious and sweet and the writing is consistent. It has an all-star cast, including Dennis Quaid (Jeff), Kathleen Turner (Jane) and my favorite actor Stanley Tucci (Muerte).
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
Mel Brooks takes on the Frankenstein story, when Frankenstein’s grandson journeys to his grandfather’s home and continues his research.
I had a hard time choosing a Mel Brooks movie to put on this list, but this was always the first to come to mind. I love how it has some of the characteristics found in many Mel Brooks films and I love his take on Frankenstein. It’s definitely worth a watch, if you haven’t seen it already!
CLUE
Following the same storyline of board game, secrets are revealed when a group of strangers are invited to a dinner party and their host, Mr. Body, is killed.
This has been one of my faves since I was six. I love the characters in this film and the atmosphere of the large, spooky mansion on a rainy evening. All of the actors are perfect for their roles and Tim Curry will always have a place in my heart for his performance in this.
THE HOLIDAY
Two women who are down in the dumps switch houses for the holidays.
This is the perfect holiday movie: funny and sweet and not one that makes you want to roll your eyes. The characters are fantastic and I love that the women decide to have an adventure during a painful season when they’re feeling pretty down. As with the others, I thought this movie was perfectly cast, and it includes my favorite actress, Kate Winslet.
A PERFECT MURDER
A husband puts a hit out on his wife.
From the humorous to the dramatic. This is another movie that was perfectly cast, particularly with Michael Douglas. He portrayed his role so well, evidenced by the fact that whenever a friend of mine talks about how much she loves Michael Douglas, I think of him in this role and have to remind myself that it’s a character, it’s likely not his real personality. I like movies with a lot of twists and turns and this one fits the bill.
