Reading Roundup // 07

This post could probably be called the audiobook roundup, as all but one of these are audiobooks. Still, there are some great books in this post, including the books of a series that is one of my favorites!

DAYS OF BLOOD AND STARLIGHT, BY LAINI TAYLOR
This is the second in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy and I listened to this on audiobook. I listened to and read the first book in the trilogy and really enjoyed the narrator so I decided to stick to audiobooks for the rest of the series. This was my favorite of the two. It continued the story a little differently than I expected it to, but I really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to finishing the series.

THE UNBECOMING OF MARA DYER, BY MICHELLE HODKIN
Instead of trying to tell you about the book, I’m just going to direct you to the trailer. I’m not sure how much I actually like the visuals of the trailer, but the words are the best description of the book–probably because they were taken from the book. This is my third time reading this book and I have loved it each and every time. I love that this book is creepy, but it’s not going to scare you and give you nightmares. It keeps you guessing. I love that this is a young adult novel in which the family is actually present and a big part of the story. Mostly, this book makes you question everything that happens (which I love) and you start to wonder if you’re rooting for the “good” character or the “bad” character, and the way it ends had me waiting anxiously for the second in the series.

THE EVOLUTION OF MARA DYER, BY MICHELLE HODKIN
This is the second book in the Mara Dyer trilogy and my favorite, I think. I’m still processing the final book (which I loved!), but I do think that I liked this one a little bit more than I liked the final book. I thought that this was a great followup to the first book. It explored what we had already seen in book one a bit more and set things up very nicely for the third book. This one was a bit creepier than the first. The ending of this was awesome and had me checking the release date of the third multiple times to see if it was moving up because I couldn’t wait. Sadly, it didn’t and I had to wait quite awhile (it felt like) before the third was released.

THE RETRIBUTION OF MARA DYER, BY MICHELLE HODKIN
If you haven’t read this trilogy yet, you lucky folks! You get to move right onto the third the same day that you finish the second, and trust me, if you get into the series you’re going to want to! This is the final book in the Mara Dyer trilogy and I loved it! I really loved how it began. The first few chapters were genius, because they kept the reader guessing. I thought this book was great for keeping the reader guessing, while still providing some answers. I thought it was a great end to the series. I think what I love most about this series is that each book was really strong and needed for the story. The things that I loved most carried through all three books and I didn’t question anything once we started to get some answers. This series probably isn’t for everyone, but what book or series is? If you like the sound of it I recommend checking it out.
